Most people assume Oklahoma is just a wind-swept prairie, but we know it’s so much more than that. The following scenic drives take you through mountains, rivers, lakes, Native American reservations, roaming bison, and the original Route 66. There are so many things to see in our great state and around Sallisaw, OK. Start exploring our home state with these beautiful drives.

Quartz Mountain State Park

This is a twenty-seven-mile drive between Altus and Lone Wolf that takes less than an hour. The main attraction is Quartz Mountain which actually sparkles when the light is right. Beautiful in its own right, Lake Altus is also a stop on this route. Be sure to take lots of pictures.

Highway 325

Highway 325 has stunning views from the New Mexico state line through the tip of the panhandle. The route is thirty-eight miles between Boise and Kenton. This drive takes you to the highest point in Oklahoma, Black Mesa.

Osage Nation Heritage Trail Byway

The Osage National Heritage Trail is seventy miles long and takes you through some gorgeous scenery in the Northern part of the state. Check out the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. You may even see some wild horses or bison along the way.

Route 66

The famous Route 66 goes right through Oklahoma with some interesting stops along the way. There are even some Route 66 museums you can visit on this route. Did you know that Oklahoma has the longest stretch of Route 66 than any other state? Maybe you’re not into cheesy roadside attractions, but you can’t beat the view from the bridge over Lake Overholser. This drive has something for everyone.

Lake Hefner Drive and Parkway

Speaking of beautiful lakes, have you seen Lake Hefner? You can drive around its seventeen miles of shoreline. Be sure to stop and see the lighthouse before you leave.

Talimena National Scenic Byway, Just Over an Hour From Sallisaw, OK

Close to home is Oklahoma’s most famous scenic route, the Talimena National Scenic Byway. This scenic byway passes through Southeastern Oklahoma and into Southwestern Arkansas. Be sure to visit in the fall for some fabulous foliage colors.

Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway

This route is Southwest of Oklahoma City and includes plenty of natural beauty and even wildlife. This scenic route goes through the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. Take lots of picture, but don’t approach the bison as they are still wild animals.
