In 2020, people have spent a lot of time being cooped up inside due to the COVID-19 virus. Fortunately, you can shake off some of your cabin fever by taking one of these six amazing road trips from Sallisaw and feel like you’ve had a full vacation!

Talimena Scenic Byway

If you’re just looking to get out of the house for a couple of hours, but don’t really want to leave your car, take a trip to and down the Talimena Scenic Byway in Heavener, OK.

This 54-mile drive takes about an hour to reach, but once you get there, you’ll be treated to incredible views and historic Native American sites that are thousands of years old. Don’t forget to take your camera because the scenery is simply gorgeous.

Lake Eufaula

Lake Eufaula is the biggest lake in Oklahoma, boasting more than 600 miles of shoreline. It’s the perfect lake to visit if you want to socially distance from other people because there’s just so much space available.

There are swim beaches, forests with plenty of wildlife, areas to go four-wheeling, boats to rent for fishing, and many other outdoor activities that will pull you out of your isolation and send you home tired, but happy.

Fort Gibson

For the history buff in your family, Fort Gibson is an ideal place to visit. In just under an hour’s drive, you’ll be immersed in the history of the state’s oldest frontier fort, which was built in 1824.

Visit nearly 30 historic buildings across 80 acres of land and learn about several archeological sites. Hear the amazing stories of the first American settlers in Oklahoma and, if you have time, pay your respects at nearby Fort Gibson National Cemetery.

Choctaw Casino

In fewer than 45 minutes, the adults in your family can be at the Choctaw Casino in Pocola, OK. If grownup fun is on your agenda, you won’t find a better place to go than somewhere to gamble and drink a little alcohol.

Of course, this type of entertainment is meant for adults only, and if you do drink, be sure to do so responsibly and in moderation and never drink and drive. Have some fun, but get home safely.

Taloka Valley Cultural Heritage Center

A 45-minute drive will bring you to the Taloka Valley Cultural Heritage Center, a fantastic learning experience for people of all ages. There is a working sawmill, a display of antique farm equipment, and many gentle farm animals wandering around waiting to be petted.

If you want the full historic experience, take a tractor-pulled wagon or horse-pulled surrey tour of the grounds as you learn about the area’s fascinating agricultural past. Many interactive exhibits are also available.

Chaffee Barbershop Museum

Across the state line in Fort Smith, Arkansas, you’ll discover a quaint museum of the barbershop that first gained fame when Elvis Presley received his military buzz cut in 1958.

Since then, Chaffee Barbershop has welcomed people from all over the world who want to see where the King’s hair was cut. You’ll also see various military memorabilia and artifacts that document the military history in the area.

Even if you don’t want to venture far from home right now, there are plenty of great road trips to take that are within an hour’s drive from home. Of course, you can stay right in town and have a grand time as well. Just come by Blue Ribbon Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and we’ll give you some ideas for some homegrown fun.
