1. Brushy Lake Park

The City of Sallisaw owns and operates Brushy Lake Park. This park is perfect for fishing, boating, and camping. There are also many picnic areas with grills and tables, group shelters, camping sites, RV sites, docks, and playgrounds. Currently, mountain bike trails are being constructed at Brushy Lake’s northern edge so the area will be perfect for mountain bikers and hikers!

2. 14 Flags Museum

14 Flags Museum can be found in downtown Sallisaw near the railroad tracks. Many historic buildings have been preserved such as Judge Faulkner’s Cabin from the 1840’s, the Lattimore Cabin from around 1835, and a historic train depot. There’s also the Trail of Tears Exhibit which informs visitors about early Cherokee life in the area as well as the Trail of Tears.

3. Cherokee Casino

This 22,000-square-foot casino has high-stakes machines, penny machines, video poker, and many e-games. The casino also has live music on the weekends and Back 40 Bar & Grill for when you get hungry. Alcohol is intended for adults of legal drinking age. Be sure to drink responsibly and in moderation. Do not drink and drive.

4. Lake Tenkiller

Lake Tenkiller is just over 30 miles away from Sallisaw and is a wonderful place to spend the day. With a wooded shoreline and some rocky bluffs, Lake Tenkiller is one of Oklahoma’s most scenic lakes. It’s known for its incredibly clear water which makes it perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing.

Tenkiller State Park has added an underwater dive park in Lake Tenkiller because so many scuba divers love to dive in the lake. In the underwater dive park, divers can find sunken boats, a helicopter, and a plane fuselage. People can rent or purchase equipment, and obtain certifications here.

5. Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge

In Sallisaw, you’re always close to nature. The Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge is just a 30-minute drive from Sallisaw and is home to white-tailed deer, bobcats, American bald eagles, beavers, waterfowl, and other birds. There’s even a webcam so people can see the eagles. The refuge is 20,800 acres and aims to protect the unique habitat that has been created by the Arkansas River flood plain.

6. Sallisaw Historical Mural

The Sallisaw Historical Mural can be found on Cherokee Ave. Between 1993 and 1999, Sallisaw community members collaborated to produce this historical mural. Any local artist was allowed to add a vignette to the mural. The mural depicts Sallisaw historical figures as well as familiar Sallisaw scenes and buildings.
