Too often, we make our way through life wearing blinders, relentlessly focused on work and other responsibilities. It isn’t healthy. Every now and then, a break is needed. One of the most fulfilling yet least expensive ways to relax and recharge is by communing with nature. Whether you fish, hike, cycle, or ride horseback, there are several breathtaking vistas in the vicinity of Sallisaw, OK. Here are three places that offer some of the best views.

1. Cherokee Nation Park Horseback Trail

A mere quarter of an hour’s drive from Sallisaw, west on US64, then south on the N4570/Dwight Mission Road, the Cherokee Nation Park sits on the bank of the Arkansas River, overlooking the Robert S Kerr Reservoir. Featuring a 6.3-mile hiking trail that loops along the shoreline of the peninsula on which the park is situated, the park is open from 5:30 am-5:30 pm daily.
Bicycles and horses are permitted along the trail, which includes spectacular shoreline views and through stands of trees. Bald eagles are frequently sighted flying overhead. To protect the abundant wildlife, dogs must be leashed. Overnight camping is permitted, although facilities are limited to portapotties and picnic benches. The proprietors advise visitors to bring drinking water for themselves and their animals.

2. Brushy Lakeview Loop and Creek Run Trails

If you take N Maple St out of Sallisaw until it turns into the N4620 Rd, it will bend to the west after about eight miles. You’ll then connect with the D1015 Rd that takes you to the Bushy Creek Reservoir and two short, wooded trails ideal for hikers, bikers, and nature lovers alike.

The Lakeview Loop is the shorter of the two, stretching slightly less than a mile along moderate terrain and, as advertised, hugging the lakeshore. The Creek Run is double the length and challenges visitors with more difficult terrain. Both offer refreshing scenery, several species of birds, and small mammals. Either trail is ideal for a family with children.

3. Burnt Cabin Trail at Tenkiller Ferry Lake

If you’re looking for a trail with a more panoramic view and don’t mind a longer drive, the Burnt Cabin Trail at Tenkiller Ferry Lake is worth the 45-minute drive to the far shore of Lake Tenkiller. Load the mountain bikes in the bed of your RAM 2500 Power Wagon, stow the rest of your gear in the spacious rear cabin, and give the 6.4-liter V8 engine a light workout before you hit the trail.

When you arrive, you’ll find cliffside trails running along the reservoir and through the woods, treating you to majestic views of the water, trees, rock formations, and the many birds that call the park home. Tenkiller Ferry Lake Park also offers boating and camping options, so make a weekend of it
