Snow ShoeingWhen the weather turns cold and snow hits the ground, you don’t have to stay bundled up inside. You can still enjoy a nice walk in the great outdoors if you strap on a pair of snowshoes! Snowshoeing is a great winter activity that anyone can participate in, and it’s a fun way to get out in the quiet of a winter day. In and around the Sallisaw area, there are plenty of places to go snowshoeing. In addition to your own back yard, you can head to one of the many nearby trails.

1. Tenkiller State Park

Tenkiller State Park in nearby Vian has three different trails ranging from 1 mile to 1.5 miles long where you can go snowshoeing. The multi-use trail runs for 1 mile and starts at the pool. It is a paved multi-use trail that is perfect for snowshoeing in the winter. It winds around the park bringing you by many of the attractions such as the cabins, the nature center, and the fishing pond.

2. Brushy Lake Park

Head to Brushy Lake to explore the woods of Cookson Hills. This park has open spaces where you can snowshoe,  you can make your way around the park and explore, or snowshoe up some of the hiking trails. There are picnic areas and playgrounds that you can still use on a winter day, and the lake offers some beautiful views.

3. Centennial Trail

The Centennial Trail runs for over 7 miles, but you can break it into sections if you just want to go for a few miles. It will take you through several different landscapes, including city parks, corridors of forest, open spaces, back yards, and wetlands. You can access the trail from the Love-Hatbox Sport Complex on 34th and Airline streets.

4. Greenleaf State Park

It’s only about a 40-minute drive to Greenleaf State Park, where you’ll find plenty of places for snowshoeing. The Greenleaf Trail to the Dam is an easy trail along with the Greenleaf Family Fun Trail. For something more challenging, try the Lower Greenleaf Trail or the entire Loop Trail. Just check before you go to see if the swinging bridge is back open. If it is closed, the trail runs for only 2 miles instead of the 19 miles when you can cross the bridge.

5. Jay Reynolds Park

You don’t have to leave town to get some exercise out in the fresh air. Right in Sallisaw, Jay Reynolds Park has a walking trail where you can go with your snowshoes. If you go around the trail one and a half times, it equals a mile, or you can branch-off in the park to get some extra mileage. This park has restrooms and a picnic shelter if you want to take a break, and if you’re going to bring the kids, they can play at the playground while you get your exercise.
