The sun is shining and the children are finally out of school for the summer. Explore the Sallisaw, Oklahoma, area by checking out one of these kid-friendly attractions.

Diamondhead Resort

Just a little over an hour drive from Sallisaw is the Diamondhead Resort. This campground sits right on the river, offering you and your family refreshing entertainment on a hot summer day. There are tent and RV campsites available at the resort. Children of all ages will enjoy a memorable camping experience with volleyball courts, a horseshoe pit, lighted basketball court, and a swim area.

There is also a nine-hole golf course located within the resort. You can enjoy the nearby river by renting a raft or canoe. Parents will enjoy sitting back with a cold drink from the full bar while the children enjoy the many amenities offered at the campground.

Lake Tenkiller

For an entertaining day spent on the lake, check out Lake Tenkiller. The land around the lakes spans over 1,400-acres for camping, outdoor recreation, golfing, and hiking. Lake Tenkiller itself is 13,000-acres and is the clearest body of water in all of Oklahoma. Bring your boat or rent one for the day and enjoy fishing, scuba diving, tubing, or water skiing. You will also find ski boats and wave runners for rent within the nearby park. After you and your family work up an appetite, you can try one of the nearby local restaurants.

Cherokee Heritage Center

Just because it is summer vacation doesn’t mean you have to wait until fall to expand your children’s education. The Cherokee Heritage Center is both entertaining and educational. This cultural center celebrates Cherokee tribal history through re-enactments, artifacts, and educational tours.

Within the heritage center, you can explore Diligwa- the 1710 Cherokee Village, the Trail of Tears exhibit, and numerous art shows. There is also an on-site museum store so you can choose souvenirs to remember your summer trip to the Cherokee Heritage Center. Make sure you check the schedule for upcoming special events including a Homecoming Art Show and craft classes.

Sallisaw/Fort Smith West KOA

If you are looking for another local getaway, the Sallisaw/Fort Smith West KOA campground is another great choice. You and your family will create lasting memories here with the lush green outdoors and an abundance of entertaining amenities. The campground is also a short distance to nearby Lake Tenkiller, caves to explore, and hiking trails of all difficulty levels.

If tent camping isn’t for you, consider renting one of the cabins at Sallisaw/Fort Smith West KOA. They have electrical, plumbing, over 36 cable channel TVs, and Wi-Fi. Outdoors, there are many walking trails to explore, a fishing lake, and an on-site pool. Don’t worry if it rains during your visit, you can use the recreation room which has exercise equipment, board games, puzzles, and a TV.
