Ducks in a Pond at the Park Folks living in Sallisaw are conveniently situated between various nature preserves, museums, and more. Many don’t realize the natural beauty that awaits in the eastern end of the Sooner State. If you’re looking for a fun day trip idea out of Sallisaw and back home, here are five ideas that are sure to work for families, couples, or solo adventurers.

Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge

Not 30 minutes from the center of Sallisaw, Sequoyah has enough beautiful nature to explore for a whole day and then some. The giant sequoia tree is the star attraction and a great place for a photo, but the entire park has beautiful sights offered by the marshy forests of eastern Oklahoma. Many visit Sequoyah for a pleasant sightseeing drive, but with the whole day at your disposal, get closer to nature and take one of the biking or walking trails.

Tahlequah History Trail

About an hour north of Sallisaw awaits Tahlequah, a small city at the foothills of the scenic Ozark Mountains. While the mountains are a bit much to explore in only a day, Tahlequah has several interesting historical attractions that keep you moving, such as the outdoor Tahlequah History Trail, which takes several hours to complete. The town has an interesting and storied past regarding settlers and the Cherokee tribes of the area, so give it a look if you’d like to learn something new.

Gathering Place

Roughly one to two hours northwest of Sallisaw awaits Tulsa, the bustling Art Deco city. While there’s plenty to see in this metropolis, one great day trip idea is Gathering Place. This crowd-pleaser of a public park has plenty of open space, gorgeous vistas, and interesting manmade constructs that show off the city’s artistic flair. If you get hungry during your adventure, the on-site Vista at the Boat House restaurant offers great meals and views of the park from above.

Cavanal Hill

If you want a truly unique nature attraction and a good hike to book, consider making the 30-minute trip south to Bokoshe and traverse Cavanal Hill. Any elevated spot of natural land must be at least 2,000 feet high to classify as a mountain, and at 1,999 feet high, Cavanal Hill instead qualifies at the world’s tallest hill. Although, after hiking the way up on foot and then looking out across the horizon from the top, it’ll certainly feel like a mountain.

From the starting point of Sallisaw, travelers are close to fun attractions that can be visited and returned from in a single day, without feeling like you missed out on too much. Give these ideas a shot the next time you’ve got an urge to explore the state.
