There’s something incredible about visiting art that’s created by your local community. Here, we have a list of 3 spots for some amazing local art within driving distance of Sallisaw, OK.

Sallisaw Historical Mural

This awesome mural was created by a group of community members between 1993 and 1999. During those 6 years, any hometown artist could add an individualized section to the wall as long as their new work didn’t cover up older works. You’ll find scenes from Sallisaw history like Cherokee Leader Sequoyah, the old downtown Sallisaw, and baptisms in Sallisaw Creek.

The Missouri Pacific Railroad station is also immortalized on the wall, even though the building currently stands as the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library. Old cars, horse wagons, and churches can also be seen painted onto the bricks. Located right in Sallisaw, this is an incredibly local opportunity to appreciate the arts.

The Gallery on Garrison

If you’re up for crossing state lines, this gallery is a place to check out often because their artwork is always changing! They feature traditional art by emerging and established artists. If you’re interested in making art yourself, they offer paint and sip parties, art classes, and residency programs. There’s even a class on how to photograph the Milky Way!

It’s not just about painting, either. They feature art from all types of backgrounds. Paintings, photography, sketching, and carvings can also be found here. Want to know the best part? Most of the artwork is for sale, meaning you can take home the pieces that you fall in love with.

The Unexpected

You can find this art scattered around downtown Fort Smith, AR. We know that sounds a little strange but hear us out! The Unexpected features art that’s exactly, well, unexpected! If you check out their website, you’ll find a map that guides you throughout the city to different murals and art projects. The organization contracts with local and national artists to create incredible art using different styles, techniques, and mediums.

For example, in 2021 The Unexpected welcomed Douglas Hoekzema (or Hoxxoh) to Fort Smith for a large-scale public art display. They opened his creative method to the local community, and he was able to demonstrate his signature pendulum painting process. The same year, they welcomed Ben Eine to create a mental health awareness mural where he was able to lead a discussion around not only art but also mental health.

Art is one of the best ways to bring people together because there aren’t barriers – just creativity. We hope these three amazing locations bring you inspiration in every part of your life.
