From prehistoric Indian sites to old trains and log cabins, you're sure to enjoy these historical places near Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Sequoyah's Cabin Sequoyah was a Cherokee Indian who was a silversmith, blacksmith, trading post owner, and creator of a written language. His development of symbols relating to the common sounds in Cherokee words resulted in an alphabet of sorts. Preserved as a National Historic Landmark is Sequoyah's one-room log cabin that he built back in 1829. more 14 Flags Museum What's so unique about the 14 Flags Museum is that it represents 14 separate nations that all had a historical influence on Sallisaw. These nations include Spain, Great Britain, France, Mexico, and the U.S. The museum encompasses a train depot and three cabins, with Lattimore Cabin being the oldest. Samuel Lattimore, a survivor of the Civil War, built it in 1835. Judge Franklin Faulkner built the second cabin sometime in the 1840s. Franklin was forced to migrate into Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears because he was married to a Cherokee woman. Artifacts from that historical event can be seen in a separate cabin. Dwight Mission Located about 10 miles northwest of Sallisaw is Dwight Mission, which was initially founded in 1820. It was a mission school for the Indians. This school was one of 40 such buildings, and it was the last of its kind to be closed, which happened in 1948. Since then, the mission's role has been that of a camp, retreat, and conference center and is the perfect setting for conferences, meetings, reunions, and more. To this day, Dwight Mission's purpose is to provide a place where the Christian community can grow in their commitment to God. Fort Smith National Historic Site There are many features, exhibits, and noteworthy places and items to experience and view at the Fort Smith National Historic Site, regardless of the amount of time you have to visit. Based on the feedback of current and previous visitors, along with Rangers and front desk employees, they created a guide providing suggestions of what to see in the time you have available. If you have an hour or less, make sure to visit Judge Parker's Court Room, Outlaws, the Trail of Tears, the Military, and Exhibits on the U.S. Deputy Marshals. You may also want to tour the Gallows or walk through the Eastern National Book Store. If you have more time, you can sit in on a Ranger-led program, read the Wayside Information Panels, or walk around the grounds. Spiro Mounds Spiro Mounds is one of the most important prehistoric Indian sites east of the Rocky Mountains and the only archeological park in Oklahoma. This 150-acre historical site is comprised of 12 southern mounds that contain evidence of an Indian culture that lived on the site from 850 A.D. to 1450 A.D. Located just 4.5 miles north and 2.5 miles east of Spiro, the Interpretive Center is open Wednesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Learn about the history associated with this beautiful city. Brushy Lake Park Brushy Lake Park, located in the beautiful Cookson Hills of eastern Oklahoma, features 23 camping sites, including sites for RVs. Facilities include picnic areas with tables and grills, group shelters with electricity, and playgrounds. The lighted boat ramp and docks make the park a great destination for boating and fishing. Pets are allowed as long as they are confined or kept on a leash. more Sallisaw/Fort Smith KOA The Sallisaw/Fort Smith KOA is a beautiful oasis of green. Campers have the option of renting an RV Site, a deluxe cabin, a standard camping cabin, a tiny house, or a large grassy tent site. Outdoor activities include swimming, walking trails, volleyball, and fishing. The kids will enjoy the playground and the gaga ball pit, while your canine companions will love the dog park. In case it rains, you can enjoy the rec room, which features board games, books, puzzles, and a 50-inch TV/DVD player. When the sun comes out, you can explore the beautiful Ouachita and Boston mountains, Robert S. Kerr Reservoir, and Lake Tenkiller. Applegate Cove Campground Located on the banks of the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir, the Applegate Cove Campground features 27 campsites equipped with 30 amp electric and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Visitors also have access to a group picnic shelter and a comfort station with flush toilets, showers, and fresh drinking water. Activities include fishing, boating, canoeing, and kayaking in a quiet and relaxing setting surrounded by mature oak and hickory trees. Cowlington Point Campground On a small peninsula on the southern edge of the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir sits Cowlington Point Campground. This campground features 35 campsites equipped with back-in driveways and water hookups. 32 sites come with 15-amp electric hookups, while the remaining sites are non-electric. Other amenities include a picnic shelter, toilets, a dump station, showers, and drinking water. Visitors can access the reservoir through a boat ramp and a swimming beach, while kids will enjoy the playground. Short Mountain Cove Short Mountain Cove sits on the east side of the Kerr Reservoir. Visitors will enjoy a natural landscape that provides lots of sun, shade, and waterfront space. The campground's 33 spaces are equipped with 30 amp electric and water hookups. Other amenities include a dump station and a comfort station with flush toilets and showers. A boat ramp provides access to the reservoir.
