How Often Should You Replace Your Car's Spark Plugs?

The spark plugs in your Chrysler are very busy car parts. Firing off hundreds of times every minute at anywhere from 12,000 to 45,000 volts is an impressive feat. But this heavy usage eventually wears all plugs down, and other engine problems can sometimes accelerate a plug's decline. Let's look at how long you can expect your plugs to last and when to visit your nearest Chrysler dealer for replacements. more How Often Should You Replace Your Car's Spark Plugs? 30,000 to 50,000 Miles for Copper and Nickel Most drivers use plugs made from copper or nickel. Nickel plugs tend to be more heat resistant than copper plugs, but copper plugs tend to have better conductivity. Both types generally last for 30,000 to 50,000 miles, which is about three or four years for the average driver. 100,000 to 150,000 Miles for Platinum or Iridium Plugs made from platinum or iridium are superior to copper or nickel plugs. These materials are harder with a higher melting point. The fact that they can run hotter makes them more resistant to fouling, as they can burn away a good deal of carbon deposits. These types of plugs usually last between 100,000 and 150,000 miles. Iridium plugs tend to be slightly more durable and long-lasting than platinum plugs. Conditions That Can Ruin Your Plugs Sooner Anything that interferes with the fuel-air mixture inside the engine's combustion chambers will cause harm to the plugs. When the inflow or oxygen becomes restricted by a clogged air filter or faulty catalytic converter, an excess of fuel is created that starts to leave a sooty residue on the plugs. This buildup of residue fouls the plugs, causing misfiring and shortening their lifespans. Dirty fuel injectors or excessive idling can also cause this kind of fouling. Foreign objects that make their way into the cylinders can also damage plugs, as can worn-out pistons that reach too far and start bumping the plug. Signs of Malfunctioning Plugs When plugs become fouled or damaged, they start misfiring. Your engine will begin to cough and sputter and idle roughly. You'll lose engine power and acceleration. Your fuel economy will also rapidly fall. You might even start stalling and have trouble starting your engine up again. Ask Your Chrysler Dealer To Clean Your Plugs Unless the electrode has burned out or the plug casing has cracked, you can often recover a fouled plug. A technician might be able to clean away deposits with a wire brush and special plug-cleaner spray. While checking your plugs, they can also clean out the inside of the combustion chamber. And they can resolve the underlying problems that caused the fouling in the first place. Have your plugs inspected, cleaned, or replaced today at Blue Ribbon Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM. We're a full-service dealership offering an excellent range of vehicles and services to our customers.

Does Your Jeep Need Winter Tires?

Driving in the snow on slippery roads covered in ice and sleet is when having the right tires matter most. To ensure your Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Durango, Jeep Wrangler, or Ram 1500 can handle extremely hazardous road conditions in icy winter conditions, mount a set of quality winter tires. Below your Jeep dealer gives you all the information you need on winter or snow tires to stay behind the wheel. more The Purpose of Snow Tires Driving on snowy and icy roads in harsh winter conditions is hazardous. You need the right tires to give you the necessary traction to brake, accelerate, corner, and steer safely. When the weather turns icy and the temperature drops below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, mount a quality set of snow tires to keep you safe. Snow tires guarantee maximum traction and a shorter braking distance and increase your handling ability on slippery road surfaces. The rubber, grooves, and sipes of snow tires provide that extra grip when you need it most. Softer Rubber The softer rubber compound of snow tires ensures flexibility in freezing winter temperatures. The soft and flexible rubber provides extra traction to drive safely on roads covered in ice and sleet. Deeper Grooves The deeper grooves increase handling performance and maximize traction in harsh weather conditions on roads covered in snow, sleet, and ice. The deep grooves direct slush and ice away from the tire to ensure the tire makes continuous contact with the road surface. Multiple Sipes The multiple sipes or slits within the tread pattern of snow tires give extra grip and reduce the risk of skidding on slippery roads in winter. Choosing a Set of Snow Tires Choosing the right set of quality snow tires for your driving and weather conditions is imperative to increase your vehicle's handling ability in winter. Snow tires have the M+S and three-peak mountain and snowflake symbols on the sidewalls indicating which winter conditions a tire is best suited to. Snow tires with the M+S symbol are suitable for moderate winter conditions. You will need extra traction if you drive on snow, sleet, and ice. Snow tires with the three-Peak Mountain and Snowflake Symbol on the sidewalls are for harsher winter conditions and provide excellent traction on road surfaces covered in sleet and ice. Mounting Snow Tires It's best to mount a complete set of snow tires to avoid losing traction and reduce the risk of skidding that could cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Fitting snow tires only on the front axle could cause your car to skid or spin out of control. Only mounting snow tires on the rear axle will affect your handling ability. Ensure you have all the traction you need in icy weather conditions and mount a set of quality snow tires. Pop in at Blue Ribbon Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram today for a range of top-quality snow tires and expert installations, and ensure your vehicle is safe on the road.

Does Your Car Need a New Engine Belt?

Your car belt drives multiple key components and plays a critical role in the operation of your vehicle. When a worn belt breaks, it will cause severe damage under the hood, and you wouldn't be able to drive your car. Below are ways to tell when your Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Challenger, Jeep Compass, or Ram 3500 needs a new belt from your Chrysler dealer. more The Belt Is Old A belt is made of robust and durable rubber, but with use and exposure to moisture and extreme heat under the hood, the belt wears and gets damaged. A belt can last anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 miles. A general rule of thumb is to replace the belt every 60,000 miles or approximately every five years. Also, check your car's owner's manual for information on the recommended belt replacements to avoid an unexpected breakdown, engine damage, and high repair costs. The Belt Is Worn or Damaged Belts usually have a smooth side and a ribbed side with grooves along the length to prevent slippage and increase traction. You'll need to replace the belt if it looks frayed on the sides, shiny, and worn. If you see cracks or notches in the belt or missing chunks of rubber, the belt may still do its job, but it could snap at any moment, leaving you stranded on the side of the road. When the belt breaks, you won't be able to drive your car without causing severe damage to the engine components. That's why following your car's service schedule is crucial to ensure a qualified technician inspects the belt regularly to avoid unexpected and expensive repairs. The Belt Is Making Noises If you hear squealing sounds from under the hood, the belt is slipping, causing premature wear and heat that could damage your car's engine components. The squealing could also come from leaking oil that will damage the belt or a damaged tensioner or accessory bearings. You'll hear ticking or flapping noises when the belt is severely frayed or partially broken. It's best to pull over immediately and call your dealer for assistance. You Struggle To Start Your Car The belt could be the culprit if it's hard to start your car or keep it running. When a damaged belt is not sufficiently powering the alternator, you'll experience issues with your car's electrical accessories, such as the windows, windshield wipers, and radio, and the battery warning light will go on. If you notice a problem with your car's belt, replace it fast before it snaps. Call Blue Ribbon Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram today for a belt replacement and avoid severe damage under the hood, getting stranded on the side of the road, and paying a lot of money for repairs.

Save on Gas A well-maintained transmission regularly serviced by a qualified Chrysler technician will reduce strain on components, ensure your vehicle performs optimally, and save you money at the gas pump. Follow your Chrysler's service schedule and factory-recommended maintenance intervals, and rely on your Chrysler technician, who will perform the necessary transmission inspections and fluid replacements timeously to keep your transmission in excellent condition. 2. Save on Repairs A transmission consists of many moving components; when these parts fail or break, you will have to pay a lot for repairs or replacements. Minor transmission issues will be detected and dealt with early on before a small problem turns into an expensive repair, helping you avoid unexpected and costly repairs and saving you time and money. 3. Over time and with use, transmission fluid becomes old and contaminated and doesn't lubricate the components adequately, directly affecting your engine performance. With regular services from a Chrysler technician, the transmission fluid will be replaced at the recommended intervals, and the components will stay adequately lubricated, reducing wear and tear, and extending the life of your vehicle. 4. Improve Gear Function A transmission that is in good working condition will shift easily and ensure your vehicle run smoothly. You will not struggle with gear shifting issues, smell horrible burning odors or hear awful and unsettling noises when you shift gears from broken or damaged transmission parts that could cost a fortune to repair. Your Chrysler technician will replace the transmission fluid long before it's old and thick, clogging up the gears and preventing the components from moving smoothly. 5. Ensure Performance Regular transmission inspections and services will ensure that your transmission is well-lubricated, working perfectly, and your vehicle performs optimally. When you take your car regularly for services at the recommended maintenance intervals, the Chrysler technician will thoroughly inspect every transmission part, check the mountings and the seals, look for leaks, and top off or replace the transmission fluid when required. Is Your Car Overheating? Visit Your Chrysler Dealer Today

Your car overheating can result in major damage to your engine. If the heat produced by the engine isn't controlled, the head gasket can blow, the pistons can warp, and the cylinders can be damaged. Fortunately, there are always signs that the engine is getting too hot. As your Chrysler dealer, we can fix the problem before it causes damage. These are some of the signs that your engine could be overheating. more Is Your Car Overheating? Visit Your Chrysler Dealer Today Engine Temperature Is Rising The temperature in your car's engine should hover around the halfway position. It may temporarily rise, but your cooling system will speed up to compensate. If the temperature starts to climb and there's no sign that it will drop, your engine is close to overheating. There are several possible causes, including a coolant leak, a clogged radiator, or damaged radiator hoses. The cause of the overheating may not be readily apparent. We advise that you pull over ASAP to enable your engine temperature to drop. Don't open the hood if you see steam, as you may get hurt. The most important thing is to allow the engine to cool down. Once the engine has cooled, call our service department immediately. Our expert technicians will find the cause of the problem and repair it. Clogged Radiator Your radiator is the center of the cooling system and the place where engine heat is exchanged for cooler outside air. Coolant is pumped through your engine to absorb the heat emanating from the engine parts as they work. The coolant then enters the radiator, where the heat will be removed. The coolant also absorbs dirt, rust particles, and other debris in the engine. The debris carried by the coolant is deposited in your radiator. As time passes, this debris will build up and cause blockages in the cooling system. The radiator, hoses, and radiator fins can all become blocked by detritus. A clogged radiator will cause your cooling system to fail, as there is no way to remove the engine heat. We'll remove the blockages by flushing your radiator and cooling system. Damaged Radiator Fan The radiator fan will automatically switch on if your car is idling. The fan blows cool air over the tubes and forces the hot air out of the engine. The fan is controlled by the thermal switch. If this switch is damaged the fan won't start. You may not notice a problem with the fan, as it's only used when your engine is on and your car isn't moving. Our technicians can replace the switch if it's failed, and the fan will work again. If your engine shows signs of overheating, call us ASAP at Blue Ribbon CDJR.
