Sequoyah's Cabin Museum This is another interesting and family-friendly museum in our city. Sequoyah's Cabin Museum focuses on the history of the Cherokee tribe. Between 1829 and 1844, this building was home to Sequoyah, a Cherokee native who invented a written language for his tribe in 1821. Today, the museum is furnished with original decor pieces from that era. You'll learn what it was like to live as a Cherokee back then, as well as many things about Sequoyah's syllabary. Admission is free, which is always a nice perk. Around the museum, there is a beautiful 10-acre park where your kids can play after the tour. The attraction is wheelchair-accessible. T. G. Overstreet House This attraction is in the nearby town of Fort Coffee, about 15 minutes away from our city. It's a historical farm and it was built in 1891. Today, T.G. Overstreet House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Kerr Center purchased the ancient home in 1988. The restoration was completed in 1991. The museum offers educational programs that let you understand what the life of a farmer was like back then. There is a small admission fee. On certain days, visitors are required to book an appointment. We suggest that you call before your visit. Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center Located in Fort Coffee, this 150-acre archaeological site offers exhibits and an introductory slide program about Mississippian culture. The attraction is on a floodplain on the Arkansas river and there are almost two miles of trails to explore. On site, you'll find an archaeologist who will be happy to answer your questions. Four times a year, during the solstices and equinoxes, Spiro Mounds offers special tours. There are many family-friendly events throughout the year. On the third Saturday of March, Spiro Mounds celebrates Family Kite Flite Day. In May, there are special events for Archaeology Day. If you like some lunch food in your brunch, we recommend getting their corn nuggets or breaded mushrooms for an appetizer or their amazing BLT. Sherry's Farmhouse Kitchen This is a brand new edition to our community, and they're located at 2333 E Cherokee Ave. They are open 24 hours a day and serve breakfast all day long, so there's literally no time of the day you can't enjoy a delicious brunch. Don't be surprised if there's a line, though: just because they're new doesn't mean they aren't packed out nearly all the time. This is a great place for homemade food, and if you aren't sure what you want, just ask Sherry for a recommendation! What we recommend is the sausage and cheese omelet, and if you need even more, try the all meat omelet. Their sweet cream pancakes are AMAZING, so be sure to get a stack of those. Their stack special comes with bacon, sausage, or ham. We're also big fans of their big farmhouse breakfasts, and the Cooper's Special: which is two pork chops and two eggs, with hashbrowns or delicious grits, and either toast or biscuits and gravy.
